Resident Evil: The Judgement Chronicles

Chapter 3:

“Koden? What’s wrong?” Roy asked the leader, because he wasn`t showing any reaction. “The signal is dead.” he replied with a sharp voice, but nobody could tell if he was angry or worried, or probably both. Concetta and Olympia stared at Koden “You mean Shiro is…?” Olympia started slowly but, was interrupted by Concetta “That doesn`t have to be the case!” Her voice sounded tense though. She turned around and started pondering as she layed a hand on her forehead. “What if they are just blocking the signal?” Roy started to explain. “I mean, this whole city is cut off from the rest of the world for a certain reason. There must be somebody who did that, and maybe he is blocking our signals too.” Slowly the room started to reek of rotten flesh. It became stronger the longer they stood inside the pub, sharing it with the dead body. “God, that’s awful.” Olympia commented on the smell. Then Concetta turned to the group again. “We need to get to a place were I can get access to the city’s network.” The others looked at her in confusion, then she continued explaining. “If this city is cut off from the rest of the world then there has to be a reason for it and if we are lucky, then we still can get access to the city’s network. I might get some answers if I am able to hack in there and maybe, just maybe we find out why we can`t contact Shiro.”
The facial expressions of her group members became colder as she explained and then totally changed. Olympia’s eyes widened, at the same time Roy completely froze in his movements and Koden’s eyes were staring right behind Concetta with a blank face. At that second Concetta heard a blood freezing moan behind her and she didn`t even have to ask what was wrong. Before she could do anything though, Olympia and Roy came back to their senses, made a step towards Concetta and pulled her in their direction just in time, as the zombie was lunging for her throat with a scream. At the same time as Concetta was pulled into safety, Koden raised his shotgun, reloaded with a smooth metallic sound and pulled the trigger as the barrel was only inches away from the approaching body. The bullets of the Spas 12 split up the head within milliseconds and the rotten victim fell to the ground, decapitated. Even though everybody was thinking the same thing, Concetta was the one who broke the tension. “What the fuck?! I thought it was dead!!” Concetta yelled, still in shock. “W-what was that thing, a zombie?” Olympia said, almost laughing about her own ridiculous suggestion. “Whatever it is, it’s dead now.” Koden stated at the decapitated and blood soaked body. Suddenly another moan could be heard from the backroom. “Does this thing… have a backdoor?” Roy asked slowly accompanied by Concetta’s shout. “There’s more of them??” “Let’s get out of here, now!” Koden ordered and headed to the door.
The four of them went outside and couldn`t believe their eyes. “I guess we`ve been a bit too loud…” Roy joked, even though he wasn`t even feeling like it. The others just stared at the mass of people that was walking outside the houses on the opposite side of the street and those who approached from the left and right. They were holding out their arms and looked exactly like the thing they ran into in the pub, just this time a choir of moans accompanied them. “Are those…the citizens…?” Olympia asked, scared, with a low voice, judging from all the different kinds of clothes that they wore. Koden’s eyes were darting from left to right looking for a way out, until he spotted the entrace to the subway. “Quick! Into the tunnels!” He yelled and the team started to run for their lives.

Diana and Kenny had left their apartment and had made their way downstairs. It was quite a walk, since they had been at the third floor and the elevator was out of order. They reached the last step and opened the door that leads to the corridor. They immediately crouched by to the nearest window. It was nailed, but still it would allow them to take a look outside through the slits. “Okay…” Kenny was whispering and nodded to Diana. Both raised their bodies until they were able to glance outside. All they saw was an empty street though. “Huh? Are they gone?” Diana said, disappointed. “But where did they go?” Kenny asked, confused and stood up. He was aiming his steps to the entrance of the building. “Be careful.” Diana whispered after him and followed right away, until both noticed the opened doors with a broken chain dangling on one side. “Is that… how it’s supposed to be?” Diana asked while slowly approaching the exit. Kenny kneeled beside the chain and replied “I don`t know, Diana. But I can tell you one thing.” He stroked over the chain. “Can you see that scratch? Somebody used a big tool to break a chain that’s this big.” “Probably, it was David?” Diana assumed, shrugging. “After all, he- …Kenny?”
Diana blinked at her friend, who slowly pointed at the other side of the street. She followed with her eyes and froze as she caught sight of the group of people they had been watching from above. It was a group of people who randomly walked into the house and back on the street again, but the way they looked and walked was just terrifying. “W-what a-are they?” Diana stuttered. “I-I have no idea… I think… they haven`t noticed us yet, so let’s just… disappear.” Kenny said, slowly trying to calm his breathing down. He didn`t want to show how scared he was, otherwise Diana would feel even worse. They slowly stepped back into the corridor again. “Wait.” Kenny whispered and went to the doors again. Slowly he reached out and closed them, without taking his eyes off the group. After he leaned the doors on each other he let out a relieved sigh. “Just to block their view, or they might get an idea to come over.” “Okay, now let’s go back up-” Diana’s sentence was cut off as the entrance door to an apartment that laid on the opposite side of the main entrance was crushed open and one of those freaks ran out of it roaring horrifyingly.
Diana and Kenny screamed as they tried to get out of the way, into different directions sadly. “What are we going to do??” Diana panicked as she looked over to Kenny and the monster in between of them. “Just run!!” Kenny yelled towards her as he made his way around their enemy’s back before he could do anything. Kenny grabbed Diana’s arm and they both started running along the corridor into the opposite direction where they came from earlier. As their feet hit the floor, more and more apartment doors were crashed, releasing one horror after another. Even the planks that nailed the windows were split in half as arms were reaching through the holes to grab some fresh meat. The two friends in between this whole mess ran for their lives letting out an outcry after another and avoiding any hand that was reaching out for them. Diana dragged Kenny around the corner, facing a few more doors, a dead end and more nailed windows. “What do we do now??” Kenny yelled as the moans of death drew closer in their ears. Then Diana spotted a window that wasn`t nailed completely in a little distance. “This one!!” she shouted and headed towards it. “We can break through here!” She explained, with her hands hitting against the planks in rage. Their pursuers had already come around the corner and there was a whole bunch of them. Kenny did the same as she and pressed his full weight against the planks, causing them to break. Screwing up his eyes for a second, as a splinter of wood ripped his hand when it broke, he exclaimed “Go, GO!” Giving her his hands to step on, the door on his left flew open and even more of those guys stumbled out of it. “Hurry!!” Diana screamed, who was almost close to tears, when Kenny finally climbed on the frame and let himself fall outside to avoid being grabbed by the hands which were only reaching through the window now. Diana helped him up and the both of them disappeared into the side street to escape the horror.

In the research facility, DoOp and Kage had been working hard on the anti-serum, while Ken was watching and controlling their steps. DoOp was giving Ken a glance now and then, because she couldn`t get rid of the feeling that he was hiding something from them. But what could that be? “DoOp, stop dreaming and finish these tests, please.” Kage was urging her friend for the third time. “Yeah, sure, sorry about that.” DoOp replied as she turned to her screen again, but her eyes didn`t let go of Ken. He was roaming around the big screen of the lab. He suddenly reached for his cellphone and took a look at it. DoOp saw that clearly and was literally hiding behind her screen because she was afraid Ken would notice how she was spying on him. Then Ken put his phone away again and made his way towards the exit. DoOp needed to follow him, that was no question, but how was she supposed to do that? She quickly looked around and spotted her coffee that was still half-full. With a side glance, to check if Kage was busy, DoOp took her cup and poured the rest of it into a plant pot that was next to her desk. After that she jumped up and said cheering “I’m gonna go and get another coffee!” “If that makes you work, just go ahead.” Kage sighed without taking a look at her, which was good, because DoOp’s head was already flushed completely red. She had never been good at lying. Then DoOp walked over to the exit and followed the corridor into the direction of Ken’s office. She almost approached the door, when suddenly David came around the corner and faced her. “Oh, DoOp, what are you up to?” he smiled at her. “Ahaha, hey David, y-you’re back already?” DoOp replied and tried to stay serious. “I was just about to get another coffee!” she exclaimed like if she was just being accused and had to prove that she is not guilty, while she’s holding out her empty cup of coffee like some kind of evidence.
David smirked at her and said with a smile “Well, well, what about if I bring you a new cup of coffee later on and now you are going to show me the progress of your work?” While speaking, David reached for his sunglasses to take them off and gestured with it to show her the way back into the laboratory. DoOp looked at him and lowered her shoulders, because she knew that she didn`t have a choice anyway when David is smiling like that. “Alright then.” she agreed, even though she was disappointed not to be able to spy on Ken. Then she turned around and walked back the way she came with David following her, who was starting the lab talk now. “Okay, so how far is the anti-serum? And what about the catalyst? Did you start working on it already?”
Meanwhile, Ken sat behind his desk in the front room of his office, with his cellphone placed to his ear again and waiting for the other side to pick up. Then a voice from the phone brought word. “Yeah?” “I`ve been in the lab and couldn`t receive your call there, you might understand that. So what’s wrong that you are calling me, Terrence?” Ken replied quickly, he wanted to get this call done before David returned. “I just wanted to report to you that my men took care of David’s little friends.” “How so?” Ken interrupted. “They have opened the main entrance to their apartment, the rest should happen on its own. So nobody will know how it happened in particular.” Ken smirked to himself. “That’s good news, indeed.” Terrence was giving Ken a second to be satisfied with their work until he continued. “Well. Rina and Alexandra need some orders from now on...  Isn`t the Government already sniffing around?” Ken’s voice became serious. “That’s none of your concern. You only do what you are paid for. I`ll call you soon enough again. Until then, you and your men stay in the background.” “As you wish.” Terrence replied submissively and hung up. “Hmph, mercenaries.” Ken let out in disgust. “But they are fulfilling their purpose.” He leaned back into his chair with a satisfying grin, pleased about the fact that everything was going like he had planned.
